Reminds me of an old Elaine C Smith sketch where she insists that her obesity is caused by her glands - the big fat greedy bastard gland.
Thank goodness weigh gain's not down to eating too much or drug side effects or through not being sufficiently physically active.
As a study 'nerd' I read the abstract (the full data was behind the inevitable paywall)and was quite astonished that the conclusions were in fact just as shite as you state. No causation was evident, no confounding factors, adjusted for, and a cohort of only 124 of quite variable age children. AD36 was present in 19 of the 67 obese subjects and in 4 of the non obese total of 57. Diet was not mentioned or discussed as a variable. Typical in fact of the rubbish studies around today, that are then used as the model for lifestyle advice that we are told will make us healthy. Look out soon for a new vaccine coming your way to combat adenovirus!
NHS Behind the Headlines did a pretty good fisking of the original paper and the stories... much more politely than I would have done.Somehow I find it hard to believe that Ad36 has suddenly started infecting people in just the last two decades...
