Fat birds!

DZ has the uneasy feeling that what he is about to write may make him look sexist, and fattist.

Occasionally you come across a research project, the results of which come into the category of “the bleedin’ obvious” This paper, reported in the Telegraph is one such. So obese girls are less successful at getting pregnant than their slimmer sisters. Surprise surprise! The study actually refers to the success of IVF treatment, but the principle is well known to most blokes. If your typical male were trapped on a desert island with these two ladies which is more likely to end up pregnant?

Some of you may feel that I am being a little unkind and unfeeling, and NICE would agree, telling us all that we should not be using the word obese to our obese patients because it’s derogatory.

But the UK is fast becoming a nation of fatties and perhaps it’s time we told the plain truth . “No Mrs Lardbucket, you’re not big boned, you’re not retaining fluid, and it’s not your glands. You’re too sodding fat, because you have no self discipline, and you eat too much.” How's that for sensitivity?

  1. I rarely take exception to what you say my masked hero, but I would suggest that some of your kind are less than helpful when it comes to providing the correct dietry advice to patients.

As one who has studied this phenomena in some depth I, along with others more highly credentialed than I are generally of the view that calories and/or lack of exercise is not reponsible on the whole for most (but not all) of the so-called epidemic of fat people, and no I'm not afraid of the word. Please read the following in the hope that it may help to provide some of the answers;-

Gary says it better than I ever could.

It is, for most. People have no idea how little food they can eat and that's allright. 600-800g solid foods daily. Sugar is the worst. Hello England.

  2. I'm not going to pretend I know as much as Blackdog. But when the first stop for our fat patients after they have booked into our department, even before they have been triaged, is the sweets and crisp machine I have to say that yes it is a "glandular" problem. The fat, greedy, bastard gland.

  3. Obese is far better than Mrs Lardbucket, you have no time and usually have no full picture.
Besides, 'obese' IS the right word. They may weep, but they will get it, eventually. No improvement, you don't refer. Simple. Improvement is the most important thing. Then you support them and all is ok in the end (with the rest of this line u r familiar).

  4. Single Female Doc here (Google playing up at work at the moment).

IMHO on a desert island where his mates couldn't see him, a bloke would shag anything.

Alas I do have a glandular problem, the gland in question being no endocrine function in my pancreas since age 5 (aka Type 1 diabetes). I have been teased and made to feel worthless all my life because I was "fat". So much so that I became a doctor to bolster my ego!

Funny thing is, I went onto another injectable (a GLIP thingy other than insulin) ate and exercised just the same and now have lost a quarter of my bodyweight (100kg down to 75). Now everyone says "how well" I have done and "how did I do it"... "errrmm... drugs!".

Amazing and somewhat sad at how judgemental society (and my colleagues) can be :-(

  7. Why do you feel you have to be so judgemental and nasty about overweight people. Fat people have enough problems with mindless yobs shouting after them without the medical profession joining in. This is like playground bullying - grow up.

  12. I think there's something in the different food thing. My weight has gone up and down like a yo-yo for years. I can put on or lose half a stone in a week. The biggest changes happen when the sort of food I eat changes. When I pig out on fish (even if it's in batter), cheese (on toast, on pizza base), peanuts, tree nuts and soya, my weight goes down. It doesn't seem to take much chocolate to push the weight back up again.

I do find exercise makes a difference but I think it's indirect - brisk walk, feel better, think what I'm going to eat instead of eating mindlessly.

(A fattie - size range over the last ten years oscillating between 12 and 26 and currently half way.)

  13. Okay, I uh was trying to read this objectively, and reading through the comments there is some negativity, but that's alri-- OH GAWD DR Z WHY YOU SO MEAN?! I AIN'T FAT I'M JUST BIG-BO-- uh WELL-MUSCLED!! *sobs and slams door*

Kidding. I am male and ridiculously good-looking. Yes this comment holds absolutely no value, but I thought I'd chime in anyway.

That's just preposterous and absurd, I'm sorry boys, I have no time to put up with your bull*** all day long.

'I am male and ridiculously good-looking. Yes this comment holds absolutely no value,'

it holds value; 'I am male and ridiculously good-looking' = 1 AND '(Yes) this comment holds absolutely no value'=0

I'm gonna go ahead and be mean: yes, you are male and ridiculously good-looking. See? It holds value = 1.

'low cut lingerie :). Bravissimo where are you' - bravissimo is apparently in shops and I just don't shop for it, but if u want I could find at least 2 bras (don't wear them though), you could p-bably have them for christmas. If that's the point. LOL You will stuff them with whatever. What now, u expext me/us (who?) to sponsor your plastic surgery to have the boobs done?

I know it's a question abt size, but I refuse to give it tou you. LOL
