Mary

Back in 2013, and with his second failed marriage behind him DZ wrote a tongue in cheek post, expressing the view that, while he was not looking to get married again he might reconsider if he met someone who ticked all the boxes, which were listed.

The next five years were spent in a variety of minor relationships with ladies who were, for the most part, personable, pleasant and fun to be with, and yet didn’t quite stir me. I began to think that my tick box list was too demanding, unreasonable and over optimistic. Especially at my age then, at 65.

And then, in August 2018 I met HER! She was thirteen years my junior, and to my great surprise she ticked all the boxes, including some not on the list. We fell totally in love, and were married the following July.

What followed were the best seven years of my life. Ever. We went everywhere together and shared every experience. And after I retired we were together almost 24 hours a day. And it was wonderful and we never tired of each other. I looked forward to growing old with her.

And then, on the exact eighth anniversary of our meeting for the first time, she fell ill. She was in hospital for five weeks, and then she died. I have lost something precious and irreplaceable.
