Impartiality

It’s occurred to me that my recent post on freedom of speech exclusively covered the religious nuttery of Islam. Long term readers of this blog, if there are any, will know that I have nothing particularly against Islam specifically, and that I regard all religions with complete, but equal, contempt. So to redress the balance somewhat, today I’m going to cover the nuttery to be found in Christianity. 

And for the best examples of batshit insane, oppressive control freakery in Christianity we are spoiled for choice. The catholic church would be a strong contender, and maybe I’ll return to them another day, but in this field they take second place by a mile to the USA brand of right wing evangelism. Jesus freakery!

It’s adherents espouse a brand of Christianity so riven with hatred, misogyny, homophobia, racism, intolerance, control freakery and greed that Jesus himself would have had trouble recognising it. Or they him, especially since they vociferously insist that Jesus was a blond haired blue eyed white man, pretty unlikely for a middle eastern Jewish guy circa 30CE.

The most disturbing thing about these loons is that, in their efforts to turn the USA into a christian theocracy they have heavily infiltrated American politics, particularly the republican party. Even within that fascist haven they have made enthusiastic bedfellows with possibly that most unchristian politician Donald Trump.

So. What exactly do they want to impose on the American populace? Lots of things really but their most vigorous obsession is with other peoples’ sex lives, and what they can do to fuck it up. Much like the catholics, only far more rabid.

The most high profile aspect of their obsession is their long campaign against the availability of abortion in the USA, a right women have enjoyed for 50 years. This campaign appears to be about to succeed if, as widely expected, the US supreme court, packed as it is with ultra right wing, underqualified justices, brings this right to and end by overturning the decision of the court in the past in the case of Roe v Wade. The bible itself does not seem to agree with the idea that life begins at conception, nor does god seem particularly averse to abortion, so the motivation here is certainly good old fashioned misogyny. They even include ectopic pregnancy in their expected abortion bans, a stunningly ignorant view which would inevitably lead to avoidable maternal mortality.

But they’re looking further than that. Once they have that under their belt they’re coming for your- contraception too. Can’t have people having sex without consequences now can we.

They’re not keen on wanking either!

Another area where they want to control peoples’ sexual behaviour is when it comes to the LGBTQ community. Our Christian zealots would like nothing better than for the USA to join that, still depressingly high number of countries, where homosexuality is illegal, and they even advocate the summary execution of gay people.
