I see it a bit differently.

If I work until I am sixty-FIVE (the normal retirement age in Univs), with my current pay level or equivalent (unlikely to change as I am never getting promoted, barring hell freezing over), then I would retire on the princely sum of £ 23,000 pa. It doesn't feel like it would be a walloping great amount for forty years on the faculty in one of the UK's better known Universities, teaching many successive generations of medical and science students.

While I can see the problem, and NHS consultants obviously earn a lot more than I do, I have my doubts about the basic argument that the public sector should get shafted on pensions because the private sector employees have already been shafted before them.

I have more sympathy with the argument that, as life expectancy increases, it is unrealistic to expect to retire at 65, let alone 60. I would like to think that the Govt and the unions could reach some kind of compromise on the basis of retaining defined benefits, but with phased increase in contributions and some agreed increase in the age of retirement.Dr Austhttp://draust.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4661337961858411173.post-11393286765803581852011-06-30T18:19:17.173+01:002011-06-30T18:19:17.173+01:00Excellent post Dr Zorro and have linked to it.
